A 32-Acre Private Fijian Island Is Up For Auction

And it's even being offered without reserve.

While in recent times the connotations of owning a private Fijian island have taken a bit of a beating, there's no doubt that a private stretch of land in the sapphire-blue pacific ocean has to remain one of the world's most desirable places to set up your basecamp.

Land in the Island nation of Fiji is, as you could imagine, pretty hard to come by in fact, only 8% of the land in the country is available for freeholding. So when a full island of its own comes available on the market, it tends to make headlines. Now, one has indeed come up for auction, in the form of the 32-acre Mai Island, resting just off the coast of Fiji’s second-largest island, Vanua Levu.

The island basically has everything you could ever imagine you'd need for an ultra-luxe, if isolated, existence. Entry to the island is seaborne, with a deep-water anchorage to park your yacht located off of its Northwestern Corner. If food and drink run low, you'll even be sustained by way of a freshwater lake and ample supplies of avocado, starfruit, and exotic chocolate persimmons.

Accomodation on the island is purposely minimalist, with a one-bedroom cottage set amongst century-old palm treas. The only other living quarters on the island come in the form of two staff areas. That's not to say community is that hard to come by, however. Just 90 minutes away by boat is Vanua Levu, which has a population of just under 150,000 people.

"Infused with the history of Fiji, the island also boasts an archeological site more than 300 years old: the foundation of a chieftain’s home, which was surrounded by a hand-dug valley and wall to protect the important residence," writes Platinum Luxury Auctions, the agency tasked with selling the property. "Once the homesite was cleared, a path to a freshwater spring was discovered; this path ends in a 6-ft by 4-ft bath chiseled into the stone, filled by the spring above."

It's unknown who the island's previous owner was, but despite its picturesque location, it's actually not that expensive. It was previously offered up for sale for just over $4 million USD, however as it didn't sell, it's now been placed up for auction without reserve.
