CALLS FOR TOBACCO SALES TO BE BANNED

Australian researchers have argued that Governments should set a date to ban the sale of cigarettes in supermarkets and other retailers,

A research team from the University of Queensland says governments should think about moving beyond plain-packaging laws to looking at reducing supply of cigarettes at retailers.

It comes after Californian city councils Beverley Hills and Manhattan Beach, banned tobacco sales on January 1, while New Zealand is also proposing measures to reduce the number of tobacco retail outlets.

Researchers say the emphasis from the government should now be shifted from consumers to the supply chain to reduce smoking rates.

“We are now calling on governments to focus on retail supply, which is the critical link between manufacturers and consumers,” UQ School of Public Health Associate Professor Dr Coral Gartner said.

"Research shows half of all adults in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, England and Hong Kong want tobacco sales phased out."

Do you think Australia should end tobacco sales?
