An Oscar winner from New Zealand has been announced as the director of a new Star Wars movie.
Taika Waititi, the director and screenwriter of 2019’s Jojo Rabbit, will direct a new Star Wars film, Disney said Monday.
The plan is for the yet untitled flick to be shown in theatres. But with not only the release of films, but also production schedules, up-ended by the coronavirus pandemic, the studio did not specify a release date or even a year.
Waititi, 44, is no wookie of the year. The 2020 Oscar winner for Best Adapted Screenplay previously directed the season finale of the Star Wars TV series The Mandalorian, and also voiced a droid in the third episode of the popular Disney+ show.
He’ll be joined by screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns, 33, who was Oscar nominated for 1917.
While nothing is known about the plot, it will likely be along the lines of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo, and be separate from the four-decade Skywalker saga.
