One small step for man, one giant leap for Normality.
Many ingredients go into the make-up of a productive weekend at home. You may have some sport planned, which you'll invariably lose but excuse away by saying you got a good workout in anyway.
You probably have ample housework or gardening to catch up on. Or maybe, just maybe, you've been efficient enough to earn yourself a couple of days simply vegging out.
Whatever your plans, nutrition is key. And for a long time, in lieu of the increasingly expensive cafe fare becoming the norm in most major towns and cities across the nation, this has meant one thing: find the nearest community barbecue, eat as much white bread and processed meat as you afford with the gold coins scrounged from your car's cupholder, and move on with your day. Because who wants to do even more washing up on a Saturday morning?
As such, the Covid-19 shutdown, which saw Bunnings Warehouse outlets around the nation transformed for months, laid waste to the weekend morning plans of thousands of Australians. We could deal with the hefty lines. We could deal with having to social distance when all we wanted to buy was a succulent and a packet of screws. But a weekend trip to Bunnings without a sausage sandwich to take away from it?
For many, Coronavirus had gone too far.
Now though, the sausage-shaped light has appeared at the end of the tunnel. According to PerthNow, WA's Bunnings Warehouse branches have started talks with local governments with view to bringing back Sausage Sizzles once and for all, taking a small but significant step to returning our nation (well, some parts of it anyway) to normality.
“We know people are missing our community sausage sizzles and we are working on a careful plan to bring them back in places where restrictions have eased,” said Bunnings chief operating officer Deb Poole. "We hope to have them back up and running in WA towards the end of the month pending final checks and consultation."
It's since been revealed that the sausage sizzle will return this weekend in Tasmania and Northern Territory. According to Bunnings chief operating officer Deb Poole, Tasmania and NT will serve as something of a test run. “The return will start off at selected stores in Tasmania and the Northern Territory this weekend where we will trial a new layout that promotes physical distancing and includes increased personal hygiene processes, above and beyond the normal processes,” Poole said in an interview.
The community sausage sizzles will be fired up on Saturday June 10 in select stores in the Northern Territory and Tasmania, while Queensland, New South Wales, ACT, South Australia and Western Australia will be back up and running by the end of the month pending government restrictions.
“While we know they will be excited by this return, as are we, we’d just ask everyone to continue to be patient and respect the guidelines in place," Poole added.
Please, respect the rules Tassie and NT sausage fiends. Don't ruin this for the rest of us.
