2019 was a solid year as far as cinema went – with Avengers: Endgame turning into a box office titan that just wouldn’t be stopped. 2020 looks set for a similar pattern, as big-name sequels, exciting reboots, and interesting new projects are all lined up for release, along with a few other noteworthy flicks to catch! FANTASY ISLAND
Release date: 14 February
A twist on the ‘be careful what you wish for’ theme, Fantasy Island puts a bunch of naive visitors on a remote and mysterious island, which seems to grant their darkest wishes, but not in the exact fashion that they thought. Michael Peña, Maggie Q, and Lucy Hale all star.
THE CALL OF THE WILD
Release date: 21 February
Harrison Ford may get top billing, but it appears a computer-animated dog named Buck is the true star of The Call of the Wild, a new adaptation of the classic Jack London storybook. Directed by Chris Sanders, heretofore best known as animation director of the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, the movie also features Dan Stevens, Omar Sy, Karen Gillan, Bradley Whitford in supporting roles.
THE INVISIBLE MAN
Release date: 28 February
Much like 2000’s Hollow Man, The Invisible Man is a dark twist on H.G. Wells original novel. Starring Elizabeth Moss, the film sees her character haunted by an believed-to-be-dead abusive ex-lover, all to the disbelief of those around her. Expect some psychological tension in this interesting-looking horror.
BLOODSHOT
Release date: 13 March
Starring Vin Diesel and directed by first-timer Dave Wilson, Bloodshot tells the story of Ray Garrison, a marine who is killed in action but resurrected as a killing machine enhanced by technology. While effective and essentially invincible, Garrison is haunted by memories of his past life that his new handlers want him to forget. The film, which was filmed in South Africa last year, is set to be the first entry in a new comic-book cinematic universe for Valiant Comics’ gallery of characters.
A QUIET PLACE: PART II
Release date: 20 March
The sensory-horror film A Quiet Place gets a sequel this year, as Emily Blunt returns to her role from the first film, searching for a new haven for her children in a world overrun by blind but deadly monsters.
NO TIME TO DIE
Release date: 10 April
Daniel Craig is back to follow up Spectre in the next (and supposedly his last) Bond film. In No Time To Die, Bond is pulled out of retirement to rescue a kidnapped scientist who turns out to be far more treacherous than expected. Alongside Craig, Bohemian Rhapsody’s Rami Malek takes on the role of the villain this time around, with Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Léa Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, and Jeffrey Wright all along for the ride.
BLACK WIDOW
Release date: 1 May
With the Infinity Saga phase of Marvel’s ever-expanding universe all wrapped up, the studio is now looking to flex it muscles with some of the lesser-appreciated characters – with Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow finally getting her solo movie. Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow will explore the life of assassin-turned-Avenger Natasha Romanoff after the events of Captain America: Civil War, and everything leading up to Infinity War.
FAST & FURIOUS 9

The Fast & Furious franchise heads into its ninth primary instalment with some new faces, as Vin Diesel and the usual crew are joined by John Cena, Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron, Michael Rooker, and Cardi B.
WONDER WOMAN: 1984

As its title suggests, the Wonder Woman sequel is set in the height of the Cold War, with Diana Prince set to take on two all-new foes: Max Lord and The Cheetah. Patty Jenkins is back in the director’s chair, and Gal Gadot returns the title role, alongside Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Kristen Wiig as The Cheetah, Pedro Pascal as Max Lord, Robin Wright as Antiope, and Connie Nielsen as Hippolyta.
TOP GUN: MAVERICK

It may have been a 33 year gap, but the follow-up to 1986’s Top Gun is releasing this year. Directed by Joseph Kosinski (who helmed the under-appreciated Tron: Legacy), the sequel continues the story of Captain Peter “Maverick” Mitchell and his fighter-pilot antics in world where war is changing drastically. But, of course, there’ll be some 80s throwbacks, including a obligatory beach scene and some stellar bomber jackets on show.
FREE GUY

Ryan Reynolds gets to take a step back from his time as Deadpool with Free Guy, a an action-comedy about a bank teller who discovers he is a background character in an open world video game called Free City.
GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE

After the underwhelming response to the 2016 reboot, Ghostbusters is getting a third instalment to the original GB timeline. The film follows a single mom and two kids who arrive in a small town and begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters, along with the secret legacy that their grandfather left behind.
TENET

Christopher Nolan’s films will never cease to drum up excitement and fan-theories, and Tenet is no different. Tenet follows a man tasked with going back in time in order to prevent World War III. John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Michael Cain all star.
MORBIUS

Morbius, which will slot into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, tells the origin story of one of Spider-Man lesser-known but equally-feared villains, the vampiric Morbius. Jared Leto is in the starring role, alongside Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson; with Daniel Espinosa (who helmed the Jake Gyllenhaal space-horror, Life) in the director’s chair.
BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC

Like Top Gun, we’re getting another longtime cult-classic sequel this year, as Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter reprise their roles as the time-travelling, rock-‘n-roll loving Bill and Ted. Now enduring the monotony of middle-aged life, the duo are warned by a visitor from the future of the need for them to create a song that will save all life on Earth and the entire universe.
MONSTER HUNTER

Based on the best-selling Japanese game of the same name, Monster Hunter is an action-monster movie which sees a military team accidentally discover a portal to a world where humans hunt gargantuan beasts in order to survive. Military captain Natalie Artemis (played by Milla Jovovich) has to help the hunters (led by Tony Jaa) stop the monsters before they find their way back to Earth.
THE KING’S MAN
Release date: 18 September 2020
A prequel to the Kingsman franchise, The King’s Man jumps back in time to the 1960s, whereby we witness the formation of the super-agent secret service. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, and Rhys Ifans; and is directed by Mathew Vaughn, who helmed the past two entries.
VENOM 2
Release date: 2 October 2020
With the surprise hit that was Sony’s Venom standalone film, it was no doubt that the studio quickly green-lit a sequel. Iconic motion-capture performer Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings, Planet of the Apes) is in the director’s chair for this one, with Tom Hardy back to reprise his role as Eddie Brock/Venom and Woody Harrelson joining as Cletus Kasady/Carnage after his post-credit appearance from the first film.
THE ETERNALS

With all of Marvel’s notable characters out of the way, the studio is moving onto more obscure projects, with the next big team-movie being The Eternals. Starring Angelina Jolie and Kumail Nanjiani, The Eternals tells the story of the first super-powered beings on Earth, namely the Eternals and Deviants, who battle over the fate of humanity.
GODZILLA VS. KONG
Release date: 20 November 2020
After we’ve been introduced to the new King Kong in Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla in 2014’s reboot and sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the two iconic movie beasts will go head-to-head in this year’s Monsterverse mash-up. Adam Wingard, who directed Netflix’s Death Note adaptation, is directing the colossal release.
