The show starring four students sharing a grotty house only lasted 12 episodes yet it "turned sitcoms on their head"
The Young Ones' 20 Greatest Moments counts down the finest scenes from the hit alternative comedy sitcom, as selected by comedians and industry experts.
It only lasted 12 episodes in the early 80s but anarchic comedy The Young Ones changed television for ever.
The show – starring Adrian Edmondson, Rik Mayall, Nigel Planer and Christopher Ryan as four students sharing a very grotty house – first aired in 1982 and finished after its second series in 1984 with the cast going over a cliff on a red double decker bus.
In that short time, it turned sitcoms on their head, breaking the fourth wall with the cast talking to viewers – which can be seen now in shows like Mrs Brown’s Boys – and it inspired comics such as Still Game’s Greg Hemphill and The Fast Show’s Charlie Higson.
It added a surreal anarchy, with talking vegetables (step forward Harry Hill or The Mighty Boosh) and showcased bands including Madness and Motorhead, making it a hit with MTV in the US.
They ran the episodes and became so obsessed with it, they created their own copycat programmes like the Real World, Beavis & Butthead and Jackass.
